DIR-3 KYC is a mandatory compliance requirement introduced by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to verify and update the personal details of every company director in India. Just like a bank KYC, failing to complete DIR-3 KYC can result in the deactivation of a Director Identification Number (DIN), restricting a director’s ability to perform legal and corporate functions. The process ensures that accurate contact details, such as mobile number and email ID, are linked to the DIN, maintaining transparency and preventing misuse. Whether you are a new director or an experienced professional, timely filing of DIR-3 KYC is essential to avoid penalties, keep your DIN active, and ensure smooth corporate governance.
- PAN card (self-attested)
- Aadhaar card (self-attested)
- Passport (mandatory if a director is a foreign national)
- Proof of present address (Utility bill/Bank statement not older than 2 months)
- Valid personal email ID and mobile number (for OTP verification)
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of the director
- Details of Nationality, Date of Birth, and DIN
- Login to MCA portal using DSC.
- Download and fill DIR-3 KYC e-form or complete DIR-3 KYC Web (for no changes in details).
- Verify OTP sent to registered mobile number and email ID.
- Attach documents and ensure they are self-attested.
- Get certification from a practicing CA/CS/CMA.
- Upload form on MCA portal.
- Receive SRN (Service Request Number) as acknowledgment.
Directors who were allotted a DIN on or before March 31, 2018, and whose DIN status is approved must file DIR-3 KYC to update their KYC details with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). This includes all active directors, regardless of their current status.
Yes, disqualified directors are also required to file DIR-3 KYC to maintain their KYC details with MCA.
DIR-3 KYC e-Form is for first-time filing or when there are changes in KYC details (like mobile number or email) and DIR-3 KYC Web is a simpler process to verify and confirm KYC details that were already filed in previous years, with no changes.
A passport is mandatory as proof of identity for foreign nationals when filing DIR-3 KYC.
The DIR-3 KYC form must be digitally signed and certified by a practicing CA, CS, or CMA. For foreign nationals, attestation by an authorized person is required.
