Do you know that after getting the GI Registration Certificate your responsibility doesn’t stop their!! Wondering why? Because just like trademarks, GI registrations aren’t forever. They come with validity period of Renewal as it is not just about ticking a box. It’s about continuing a legacy, protecting local artisans, maintaining market exclusivity, and staying eligible for international trade protections. 10 years, to be exact. To keep the legal protection alive, you need to file for GI Renewal before that period lapses. Otherwise, your rights, recognition, and even export benefits linked to that GI could vanish overnight.
- Application for Renewal – Form GI-4
- Copy of the original Registration Certificate
- Authority Letter (if filed by a representative)
- Proof of usage or continuity (if requested)
- Prescribed Government Fee
- Updated contact/address details (if changed)
- File Form GI-4 with the required documents before the expiry.
- Pay the renewal fee as per Rule 10 of the GI Rules.
- Registrar reviews the application; if complete, it’s accepted.
- GI is renewed for another 10 years.
- If not renewed on time, a grace period of 6 months is available with surcharge.
